Condition

Here’s one of Cher’s most overlooked solo efforts from her early 70s imperial phase, when she was carving out her own artistic identity separate from Sonny. “Bittersweet White Light” finds her diving deep into blues and R&B territory with a raw vulnerability that’s worlds away from the polished pop confections most people associate with her catalog. The album’s centerpiece, her haunting cover of “Song for You,” showcases vocals that are stripped of any theatrical flourishes just pure, aching emotion that rivals Leon Russell’s original. It’s the sound of an artist pushing against commercial expectations and winning.
